‘We’ll track him to wherever he’s sleeping tonight and take him there,’ Bergman said.

‘I didnae sign up for a long campaign,’ the tall Aberdonian said. ‘And I’m no’ very keen on your plan.’

‘Your boss wants you here, so tough luck.’

‘I’m no’ taking a gun. He’s armed and he’ll shoot anybody with a gun.’

‘I thought you Jocks were hard men?’ Bergman snorted.

‘There’s hard and there’s plain stupid. He’s waiting for you with that pump action…BANG, BANG…you’re dead.’

‘We have body armour.’

‘He’ll shoot you in the face, like he did with that guy in the caravan park.’

‘What man?’ Gabryjel Nowakowski said.

‘That spree killer who killed half-a-dozen folk with a sawn-off.’

‘I remember that nutter,’ the short Aberdonian said. ‘He took out a pub full of Glaswegians with a pump-action shotgun. The polisman saw how good it was and got one of his own.’ He scowled. ‘But we don’t have one.’

Bergman started the car. ‘All right, you can stand guard outside. We’ll take him by surprise now we know how to get into his house without using the battering ram.’

‘Where are we going?’

‘We’re going back to Elgin. We need to know what he’s doing and he knows my face and Gaby’s, so it has to be you two doing the recon.’

‘How will we know it’s him?’

‘He drives a Mercedes SLK sports car and I’ll give you the registration in case you have any doubts about it.’

‘All right, and nae need for the sarcasm.’
